A truly sumptuous giant double from the Monniers, but without any coarseness; it is a refined and beautiful flower. If we had to guess, we'd say it was so named because of the way it looks from below. You see a distinctly square outline, with a mass of white petals, rather like a 3D lacy tablecloth.

Our current photo was taken in the very hot summer of 2013 and really doesn't do the plant justice. This one needs to be sheltered from the excesses of wind, rain and sun. The blooms (which are freely produced on a healthy plant) tend to bruise and can also develop brown patches in prolonged wet weather. Yes, she is a bit of a primadonna, but she's worth a little cossetting, to coax those glorious pure white flowers to show at their magnificent best.

Tube: White, green tinge, short.

Sepals: Broad, white, with greenish recurved tips, held half down.

Corolla: Fully double, three quarter flared, white. The petal edges are lightly waved and toothed. Only the stamens and pistil are pink.

Foliage: Mid green.
